Los eventos de larga distancia están en constante crecimiento y los factores limitantes de un Ultramaratón también. La ciencia sigue avanzando en el intento de comprender cómo las capacidades físicas, biomecánicas y fisiológicas interactúan para que el atleta tenga éxito en cada carrera.

Hoy nos centraremos en aquellos factores limitantes de un Ultramaratón. Estos y otros eventos se caracterizan por una gran variabilidad en términos de distancia (sprints, media distancia, larga distancia), terreno en el que se desarrollan (pista, ruta o campo a través), duración (carreras de un día, carreras de varios eventos de un día), etc. Salvo Kilian Jornet, es inusual lograr el éxito en diferentes eventos de carrera debido a las diferencias en los requisitos biomecánicos, fisiológicos y técnicos de cada distancia y modalidad (Thompson, 2017).

Y también el artículo sobre VO 2 máx., ya que es un determinante importante del rendimiento, pero es relativamente homogéneo en los corredores de élite. Se ha demostrado que el VO2 y la velocidad en el umbral de lactato son predictores superiores del rendimiento en carreras de distancia de élite (estudio).

Una revisión sistemática de la literatura científica realizada en 2021 buscó en la base de datos PubMed. Se el eligieron estudios que fueron escritos en inglés, los estudios analizaron distancias de Ultramaratón de 42,2 a 101 km. Al final 23 artículos cumplieron los criterios de inclusión.

Los participantes se caracterizaron como atletas experimentados o bien entrenados en todos los estudios debido al volumen de entrenamiento que tenían hasta el día de la carrera. Un resumen de las características de los participantes se presenta en Tabla 1. El número total de participantes fue de 1002 (893 hombres, 86 mujeres y 23 desconocidos).

Cona et al. (2015) exploraron el funcionamiento cognitivo en atletas que participaron en la carrera Trans d’Havet (80 km), utilizando dos versiones modificadas de dos tareas computarizadas: la Tarea de Control Inhibitorio y un paradigma de tarea dual con estímulos emocionales, justo antes de comenzar la prueba.

Se dividieron según el rango de carrera en dos grupos (es decir, corredores más rápidos y corredores más lentos) y se comparó su rendimiento cognitivo.
